Censorship in Switzerland?

by Laurie Kazan-Allen

Mystery surrounds the cancellation of a preview screening of a Swiss documentary entitled: The Multinational of Victims.1 The film, which was commissioned by the Italian language Swiss Radio and Television Broadcasting Company, was due to be shown at the Casa d'Italia (House of Italy) in Zurich on September 7, 2011.

A press release issued on September 7, by the Casale Monferrato Victims' Group (AFEVA) explains that the documentary focuses on the Italian trial of Swiss billionaire Stephan Schmidheiny and Belgian Jean-Louis Chislain de Cartier De Marchienne, both former directors of the Eternit multinational asbestos conglomerate. The stories of Italians who worked at Eternit plants in Switzerland and in Italy are told by filmmakers Dinorah Cervini Herz and Gaetano Agueci who spent ten years working on this project.

Attempts are being made to ascertain the reason for the cancellation of the preview. The AFEVA press release suggests that “interference” by agencies which handle public relations for Schmidheiny lies behind these developments.
